Awards
Dr Freckelton received the following bursaries and scholarships while he was at the University of Sydney:
- Walter Reid Bursary (1976-1979)
- Sir Arthur George Bursary (1980)
- Pitt Cobbett Scholarship (1980)
- Sir Frank Packer Scholarship (1981).
In 1994 Dr Freckelton was awarded a Red silk’s bag (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brief_(law); see also P Heary, “Counsel’s Baggage” (2013) 153 Victorian Bar News 88.) by Costigan AO KC for work on the Children of God case.
In 1997 Dr Freckelton was elected to life membership of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Psychiatry, Psychology and Law.
In 2007 Dr Freckelton’s Book (co-authored with David Ranson), Death Investigation and the Coroner’s Inquest (OUP, 2006) was shortlisted as Australia’s Scholarly Book of the Year.
In 2007 Dr Freckelton was admitted to the Inner Bar of the Victorian Bar (ie took silk, made Senior Counsel/Queen’s Counsel).
In 2008 Dr Freckelton was elected to Honorary Fellowship of the Australian College of Legal Medicine.
In 2012 Dr Freckelton was elected to Fellowship of the Australian Academy of Law (see http://www.academyoflaw.org.au/ ).
In 2012 Dr Freckelton was appointed an Ambassador for Club Melbourne (see http://www.clubmelbourne.com.au/ ).
Grants
Dr Freckelton, together with colleagues, has received the following grants:
- 1999-2011: Australian Institute of Judicial Administration (AIJA) and National Institute of Forensic Science (NIFS): surveys of judges and magistrates in relation to Expert Evidence.
- 2010-2012: ARC Linkage Grant ($140,000, with AIJA and Australian New Zealand Policing Advisory Agency (ANZPAA) ) in relation to Expert Evidence project (jury survey).
- 2012-2013: ARC Linkage Grant ($60,000, with AIJA and ANZPAA) in relation to Expert Evidence project (surveys of judges, lawyers & experts).
Orations
Upon invitation, Dr Freckelton AO KC has given:
- the Myers Oration (ANZAPPL, Melbourne: 2005),
- the FW Guest Memorial Lecture (Otago University, Dunedin: 2007) and
- the Kirby Oration (Australasian Association of Bioethics and Law, Gold Coast: 2011)
